Professor Xavier Carcopino, MD, PhD, is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Aix-Marseille University (AMU) and Head of the Department of Gynecological Surgery at Hôpital Nord, AP-HM, Marseille. He leads the teaching of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the AMU School of Medicine and serves as national coordinator of the French university diploma in colposcopy. His clinical expertise includes gynecologic oncology surgery, colposcopy, and the diagnosis and management of cervical, vaginal, and vulvar disease, with a particular focus on cervical cancer prevention. His academic and research work is centered on HPV-related disease, cervical cancer screening and prevention, and gynecologic oncology. He has developed strong expertise and leadership in national and international scientific societies. He is the current President of the French Society of Colposcopy and Cervico-Vaginal Pathology (SFCPCV), after serving for nine years as its secretary, and has been involved in organizing its annual national congress for the past eleven years. He is also President-Elect of the European Federation for Colposcopy (EFC), a member of the IFCPC Executive Board, Scientific Chair of the IFCPC, and contributes to the European Commission Initiative on Cervical Cancer and to major international consensus statements in the field.

    Strategic planning proposal

My vision is for the IFCPC to strengthen its position as the leading global reference organization in colposcopy and cervical cancer prevention. At a time when colposcopy courses are increasingly being developed by multiple scientific societies, the IFCPC must more clearly affirm its leadership in educational standards, international coordination, and professional visibility.

My priority would be to make training in cervical cancer prevention techniques adapted to local conditions and available resources a core activity of the IFCPC. The objective is not only to teach colposcopy, but also to promote realistic, high-quality prevention strategies that can be implemented across very different healthcare settings. This includes recognizing, maintaining, and further developing the existing IFCPC distance learning course, while linking it more closely to webinars, congress activities, practical courses, and hands-on training. Particular emphasis should be placed on case-based teaching, with discussion of practical clinical cases illustrated by high-quality colposcopic images, both during congress sessions and in regular webinars.

My second priority would be to better structure collaboration between the IFCPC and regional organizations. Strengthening links with the European Federation for Colposcopy and the Latin-American Federation of Lower Genital Tract Pathology and Colposcopy, while supporting the creation of an Asian federation bringing together colleagues from China, Japan, and India, would help build a coordinated international calendar of educational events. This would reduce conflicts between meetings and courses, optimize their distribution over time, and support the regular delivery of training, webinars, and scientific exchange under the umbrella of the IFCPC.
